Volkswagen Golf Service & Repair Manual: Aqua-Premium - application instructions for water-based products

Issued 06.2013
When using water-based products always devote scrupulous care to the substrate preparations before pretreating with the materials specifically recommended for use with water-based products.
Substrate
Substrate pre-treatment:
Clean metallic substrates preferably with nitrocellulose thinner -LVE 856 000 A3-.
Use silicone remover -LSW 019 000 A5- to clean sanded surfacer surfaces and old paint.
Pretreat plastic surfaces thoroughly according to → Chapter „Paintwork system for plastic components“, and then clean it again using silicone remover -LSW 019 000 A5- before proceeding with subsequent work.
Masking
Use only commercially available, waterproof masking tape and water-resistant glued masking paper or plastic cover sheets.
Spray guns/Spraying systems
Compliant spray guns are suitable spray guns.
  Note
Alternating application of water-based and conventional products using a spray gun/spraying system is not recommended. The components that come in contact with the application medium in spray guns/spray systems employed in the application of water-based products must be made of corrosion-resistant materials (stainless steel, plastic).
Mixing /Adjusting vessels
Only containers in plastic or in tin with an inside coating are approved for mixing and adjusting viscosity on water-based products.
Material temperature
Since the viscosity and the application behaviour of water-based products depends on the material temperature, you must ensure that the water-based products have a temperature of between +18°C and +35°C at the time of adjusting the viscosity or the time of application.
Application
The handling of water-based products is in essence influenced by temperature and humidity. This influence can limit or even prevent application, if certain preconditions are not present or met. In the application window for water-based products, the key points are identified.
To ensure optimum application at different climatic conditions and object sizes, the following table provides a recommendation for the use of additive for Aqua Premium -LVM 035 200 A3- or additive for Aqua Premium -LVM 035 301 A3-.
Table for different climates

Climate in spray booth Temperature range Humidity range LVM 035 200 LVM 035 301
Partial coatings Complete coatings Partial coatings Complete coatings
Cold and dry climate 20 °C 15-30 % Suitable to a limited extent Not suitable Suitable Suitable
Average climate 20-30 °C < 30 % Suitable Not suitable Suitable Suitable + 10% demineralised water -LVW 010 000-
30-60 % Suitable Suitable Suitable to a limited extent Suitable
> 60 % Suitable Suitable Suitable to a limited extent Suitable to a limited extent
Hot climate 30- >35°C 30-60 % Suitable Suitable to a limited extent Suitable to a limited extent Suitable
Hot and humid climate 30- >35°C > 60 % Suitable Suitable Not suitable Suitable to a limited extent
Hot and dry climate 30- >35°C 15-30 % Suitable to a limited extent Not suitable Suitable Suitable + 10% demineralised water -LVW 010 000-
30- >35°C < 15 % Not suitable Not suitable Suitable to a limited extent Suitable to a limited extent + 10% demineralised water -LVW 010 000-

The temperature and humidity ranges listed in the table are approximate values and always depend on the local conditions. I.e., the air flow in the booth, the spray guns (type and/or nozzle size) and the application itself have a strong influence on the film formation and the quality of the coat.
Assuming that in a modernly equipped painting business, a handling temperature of at least +20 °C is guaranteed, special measures regarding humidity are only necessary when the humidity is outside of the handling range.
Measures to be taken when relative humidity is too high
If the relative humidity is too high, deviations in shade, clouding in metallic colours and an absence of holding power on vertical surfaces can occur. Raising the temperature in the spray booth can remedy this, provided the user finds this acceptable. Use only additive for Aqua Premium -LVM 035 200-.
Measures to be taken when relative humidity is too low
If the humidity is too low, it can result in increased levels of spray mist and decreased spray mist absorption. Lowering the handling temperature (if possible), can remedy this; however, the temperature must remain above +18 °C. Use only additive for Aqua Premium -LVM 035 301-.
Airing times and reworking times
In the case of water-based products, the airing times between spray passes and end airing or reworking times are negatively influenced by low temperatures and high humidity. The drying process between the individual spray passes or before further reworking can be accelerated by:
Accelerated discharge of humid air through blowing with variable and stationary air acceleration systems with and without drying (hand-held units, floor-mounted appliances, ceiling systems etc.)
  Oven drying
  Infrared drying

Personal protective equipment:
  •   Adhere to the safety data sheet.
  •   Wear personal protective equipment during application.
